“When an actor comes to me and wants to discuss his character, I say, ‘It’s in the script’. If he says, ‘But what’s my motivation?’ I say, ‘your salary’. “ –Alfred Hitchcock

Actors seem to need to know the right questions to ask and are required to do a lot of their own character and script analysis. It’s our job (as actors) and we study for this: to figure out the character’s ‘objective’, the ‘super objective’, the character’s goal etc. etc. — whomever you listen to or with whom you study. Then the Director has his say — ideally before the actor has read his mind!

This is a full-time job, and one must research and become the character and not over-intellectualize. Oh dear, ‘the intellectual actor’. You may think this is a compliment, but it’s not! You must come from the gut and above all — truth.

Auditioning? Love it or Hate it…it’s necessary to Audition to get a job! The more you audition,
the better you get at it (hopefully) and the less nervous you get.

Three things from the book “Audition Secrets…” are right here and seem simple:

PREP – Preparation
ROAR – Own the Room
FIN – It’s over, don’t beat yourself up or think it’s “in the bag”.

These tools are explained in more detail in the book, which can be found at

www.audition-secrets.com

You MUST prepare. Casting Agents and Clients name this as their No.1 annoyance – when an
actor has come unprepared.

When you go into the audition room, these are the 2-5 minutes of acting you may do all week, so
make the most of it!

When it’s all over, it’s over. At least enjoy the fact that you got SEEN and hope for the best. Just
because you don’t get the job, doesn’t mean YOU were bad. You know, it’s the old – ‘they wanted
a different color of hair in the end’. Give yourself a break.

Please remember that those people casting you are “not out to get you”. Actually, they are out to make you
look as good as possible – so help them out! They have clients to please too.

So, as I always say, get out there and HAVE FUN and BE PREPARED.

I can’t wait to see Russell’s version. Here’s what he thinks…

What a great idea and wonderful casting with Russell Brand playing ‘Arthur’ in the remake of ‘Arthur’. Brand certainly has his own fast-paced wit and sense of humour.

He says:

“I am hoping that I too will get an Oscar nomination,” he told MTV News when they visited the “Arthur” set. “What I did is, I’ve pretended to be Dudley Moore for a lot of this film, because I was thinking perhaps they just might think, ‘He’s almost the exact same as him. Let’s nominate him for an Oscar.’”

Ha! I think Russell can hold his own with this character (“a loveable drunk”), by tapping into his past when he was a drunk, but is still certainly loveable. I do hope filming is over soon so he can grow back his facial hair!

Who’s this?? That is the cloned child of Russell Brand and Johnny Depp. I call him my son because I was there when he was created and born. Check him out at djsteen.com

Film opens April 8th in the USA! I’m in Australia, so maybe I’ll get to see it for free on the plane!

There ya have it. My favorite is MAO’S LAST DANCER. Who says it can’t make the top? Right-ee-oo, many. It’s my top, so really now folks, does anything else matter………………………….? Now now, no dart throwing or blood, I take the “Freedom of Speech” American-style.
