Actors seem to need to know the right questions to ask and are required to do a lot of their own character and script analysis.  It’s our job (as actors) and we study for this: to figure out the character’s ‘objective’, the ‘super objective’, the character’s goal etc. etc. — whomever you listen to or with whom you study.  Then the Director has his say — ideally before the actor has read his mind!

This is a full-time job, and one must research and become the character and not over-intellectualize.  Oh dear, ‘the intellectual actor’.  You may think this is a compliment, but it’s not!  You must come from the gut and above all — truth.

P R E P – R O A R – F I N (These 3 words will WOW your audition technique!)

Auditioning?   Love it or Hate it…it’s necessary to Audition to get a job!  The more you audition,
the better you get at it (hopefully) and the less nervous you get.

Three things from the book “Audition Secrets…” are right here and seem simple:

PREP – Preparation
ROAR – Own the Room
FIN – It’s over, don’t beat yourself up or think it’s “in the bag”.

You MUST prepare.  Casting Agents and Clients name this as their No.1 annoyance – when an
actor has come unprepared.

When you go into the audition room, these are the 2-5 minutes of acting you may do all week, so
make the most of it!

When it’s all over, it’s over.  At least enjoy the fact that you got SEEN and hope for the best.   Just
because you don’t get the job, doesn’t mean YOU were bad. You know, it’s the old – ‘they wanted
a different color of hair in the end’.  Give yourself a break.

Please remember that those people casting you are “not out to get you”. Actually, they are out to make you
look as good as possible – so help them out!  They have clients to please too.

So, as I always say, get out there and HAVE FUN and BE PREPARED.

See there, everyone is human and the people you audition with really do want you to do well because it makes their efforts look good to their clients and so on…

A word of encouragement, A casting Agent in LA says, “All I have to do in the morning is shower and show up. The actor showers, rehearses, chooses wardrobe, rehearses some more, throws up, memorises in the car.  Faces a room full of people vying for the same part and get five minutes of my time.  There has to be respect for that.  They have certainly earned mine.”

• Know your lines (Inside and out! Know your lines)
• Know (or visualize) Who, What and Where (explanation below)
• Know who you are auditioning with, what they are like, what they expect, what they have done. (do your homework)
•  Be on time!  Organise yourself to (give time for traffic, public transport problems & getting lost, my personal favorite)
•  Re-read your CV so when the camera is on, you remember what you’ve done
•  Be ready with 10 things about yourself – 2 being funny
• Five to 10 things about your acting abilities (studies, past projects or show, TVCs, perhaps an interesting thing about one or each of your experiences.

HAVE FUN!

When you get there (let’s say to your first audition), no matter how many times you tell yourself – “I’m cool” — check your armpits — or go outside the room and walk and see if your knees are shaking so badly that you fall down.  Now pick yourself up and LAUGH!
